Bed Net Distribution
The impact of a $10 bed net is profound -
in that it can truly save the lives of people living in areas
impacted by malaria carrying mosquitoes. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control
(CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia:
Each year 350–500 million cases of malaria occur
worldwide, and over one million people die, most of them
young children in sub-Saharan Africa.
In areas of Africa with high malaria transmission, an
estimated 990,000 people died of malaria in 1995 – over 2700
deaths per day, or 2 deaths per minute.
In 2002, malaria was the fourth cause of death in children
in developing countries, after perinatal conditions (conditions
occurring around the time of birth), lower respiratory
infections (pneumonias), and diarrheal diseases. Malaria caused
10.7% of all children's deaths in developing countries.
The biggest challenge is delivering bed nets and teaching
people to use them properly. The bed net costs are very low, but
the cost to deliver, especially to remote regions of Kenya can
be quite expensive and a time consuming endeavor. Partners for
Care has in some cases traveled 24 hours by bus in order to
visit people in need of medical care, food, and supplies, and
generally uses these trips to also deliver as many bed nets as
we can carry. The "Peace Bus" in this picture was sponsored by
Partners for Care to deliver health, hope and healing after the
post-election violence in early 2008. As shown, this bus was
also stacked to overflowing with life saving bed nets to help
fight malaria as many displaced persons were left without food,
shelter or other essentials.
Partners for Care is actively seeking other organizations
and individuals to partner with us in this endeavor.
How you can help
Contact Partners for Care to participate in a short term
mission trip to deliver life saving bed nets, information,
and medical care to areas of Kenya where these are in short
supply - if available at all. You may also consider making a
donation and specifying that the funds be used to deliver
bed nets - in order to help stem the tide of people,
especially young children, dying needlessly each day as a
result of malaria.
