Community Transformers
Two young men, Nick and Charles, grew up in
Mathare Slum in Nairobi, Kenya. After completing
school, rather than leaving the slum to pursue their careers,
they opted to stay and make their career caring for the hurting,
ill and desperate in the slum where they grew up.
Nick and Charles created Community Transformers,
an organization relying heavily on volunteers to support people
living with AIDS, provide medical care, provide meals for the
hungry, etc. They find a way to meet the needs of those in
desperate circumstances, ranging from women who are locked out
of their homes (small metal shacks) for lack of ability to pay
the rent, to providing long term care for children orphaned by
AIDS or separated from their families following the
post-election violence in early 2008. Community Transformers provides educational programs for AIDS
patients to help them battle the disease as well as to live more
productive lives. Their work has been
supported primarily by faith in God - as they have had little
financial support from others.
Partners for Care has been blessed to work alongside these
men, and are now providing support for their work. Considerable
more funds are needed for their work than we can presently
supply, so we are constantly in search of partners to joins us
in supporting the passion and vision of these Godly young men.
Recently, a Partners for Care team from the US on a short
term mission trip assisted Community Transformers with the build
out of a Cyber Cafe on the edge of Mathare Slum. This project
will help Nick and Charles to raise funds for some of their
operating needs. Partners for Care is proud to play a small part
in their initiative to improve self-sufficiency. This is
consistent with our goal of empowering, equipping and
encouraging those we partner with in Kenya - to provide a
hand-up rather than a hand-out that leaves people dependent when
their goal is to become self reliant.
The picture below shows the headquarters of Community
Transformers, a humble building on the edge of Mathare Slum
where these men and their volunteers serve God by giving all
of themselves to others. They are currently caring for about
300 AIDS patients monthly, and are providing a home for 34
orphaned and vulnerable children.
How you can help
Pray for the work and for provision to support the
ongoing work of Community Transformers. If you have a
passion for children and others living in desperate
conditions such as those found in Mathare Slum, consider
supporting Partners for Care and designating your donation
to the work of Community Transformers. Also, consider
participating in a Partners for Care team making a short term
mission trip. If you have business or technical skills, we
would be pleased to have you assist with the improvement and
operations of the Community Transformers Cyber Cafe. We can
promise a life altering experience from spending even a
single day with these Godly young men and the people they
serve.
